The event was hosted by the <b>Mexican Society of Directors and Audiovisual Works Realizers (SOMEDIRE)<\/b>, one of Latin America\u2019s oldest societies, founded in 1963, and led by director <b>Gilberto de Anda<\/b>, alongside the <b>General Society of Mexican Writers (SOGEM)<\/b>, chaired by screenwriter <b>Manuel Rodr\u00edguez Ajenjo<\/b>, President of its Board of Directors.<\/p>\n<h2>Audiovisual Transformation Process<\/h2>\n<p>Both assemblies were framed within a deep transformation process led by <b>FESAAL<\/b>, involving most of its Latin American societies. This included statutory reforms positioning audiovisual authors, screenwriters, and directors at the forefront of leadership, strategic planning, and future goals for <b>AVACI<\/b>. These congresses were considered pivotal in strengthening the defense of audiovisual authors\u2019 rights in Latin America and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>The FESAAL Congress was inaugurated by <b>Miguel \u00c1ngel Diani<\/b>, film screenwriter and President of <a href=\"https:\/\/argentores.org.ar\/\">ARGENTORES<\/a>, one of the oldest playwright and screenwriter societies in Latin America, approaching its 115th anniversary. Diani emphasized the need to focus in 2025 on supporting countries like Brazil, Paraguay, and Peru to ensure that all Latin American filmmakers have salaries and robust entities advocating for them.<\/p>\n<p>Next, <b>Manuel Rodr\u00edguez Ajenjo<\/b>, the newly appointed President of <a href=\"https:\/\/sogem.org\/\">SOGEM<\/a>, highlighted operational challenges arising from the organization\u2019s reliance on author\u2019s rights revenue instead of membership fees. This has led to confusion about SOGEM being mistaken for a union. Furthermore, he noted that Mexican authors lack social security due to restrictive legislation.<br \/>\n&#8220;Recognition and remuneration through author\u2019s rights are not gifts\u2014they are achievements,&#8221; underscored <b>Jos\u00e9 Antonio Medina Hern\u00e1ndez<\/b>, SOMEDIRE&#8217;s Vice President, during his formal inauguration of the FESAAL Congress.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting aimed to enhance mutual support among member organizations, encourage the establishment of management societies in countries lacking them, and promote fair remuneration and efficient distribution of author\u2019s rights royalties.<\/p>\n<p>Notable attendees at the FESAAL Congress included <b>Daniella Castagno<\/b>, President of <a href=\"https:\/\/atn.cl\/\">ATN<\/a> (Chile); directors Carmen Guarini and In\u00e9s de Oliveira C\u00e9zar (<a href=\"https:\/\/dac.org.ar\/\">DAC<\/a>); Daniel Di Napoli, Director of the AVSYS System; author\u2019s rights lawyer <b>Luis Mangiavillano<\/b> (DAC); Colombian directors <b>Teresa Saldarriaga<\/b>, <b>Camila Loboguerrero<\/b>, and <b>Yuldor Guti\u00e9rrez<\/b>, alongside author\u2019s rights lawyer <b>Adriana Saldarriaga<\/b> (<a href=\"https:\/\/directorescolombia.com.co\/\">DASC<\/a>); screenwriter <b>Alexandra Cardona Restrepo<\/b> (<a href=\"https:\/\/redescritores.com\/\">REDES<\/a>); <b>Alexis Buense\u00f1or<\/b> and <b>Eduardo de Freitas<\/b>, President and Director General of <a href=\"https:\/\/agadu.org\/\">AGADU<\/a>; Uruguayan director <b>Marcela Matta<\/b> (<a href=\"https:\/\/dgucine.org.uy\/\">DGU<\/a>); Panamanian directors <b>Ricardo Aguilar<\/b> and <b>Luis Romero<\/b> (<a href=\"https:\/\/edap-panama.org\/\">EDAP<\/a>); Peruvian director <b>Franco Garc\u00eda<\/b> (<a href=\"https:\/\/dacapdirectores.org\/\">DACAP<\/a>); Paraguayan director <b>Claudia Z\u00e1rate<\/b> and lawyer <b>Vanella Barbieri<\/b> (<a href=\"https:\/\/creadorespy.org\/\">CREADORES PY<\/a>); Brazilian directors <b>Henrique de Freitas Lima<\/b> and <b>Malu de Martino<\/b> (<a href=\"https:\/\/diretoresbrasil.org\/\">DBCA<\/a>); screenwriters <b>Sylvia Palma <\/b>and <b>Thiago Dottori <\/b>(<a href=\"https:\/\/gedarbrasil.org\/\"><b>GEDAR<\/b><\/a>); Ecuadorian directors <b>Manuel Sarmiento Torres<\/b> and <b>Yanara Guayasam\u00edn<\/b> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/adgecuador\/?locale=zh_CN\"><b>ADG<\/b><\/a>); <b>Gloria L\u00f3pez<\/b>, general director of <b>SOGEM<\/b> and <b>Helo\u00edza Guzzi Campos<\/b>, representing The Ministery of Culture of Brazil and <b>Ignacio Mart\u00ednez<\/b> on behalf of the Council of Author\u2019s Rights of Uruguay.<\/p>\n<p>The session concluded with the proposal of provisional authorities from other continents to join the AVACI Executive Council, with the following nominations: President: <b>Miguel \u00c1ngel Diani<\/b> (<a href=\"https:\/\/argentores.org.ar\/\">ARGENTORES<\/a>); Vice President: <b>Daniella Castagno<\/b> (<a href=\"https:\/\/atn.cl\/\">ATN<\/a>); Second Vice President: <b>Yoon Jung Lee<\/b> (<a href=\"https:\/\/dkg.or.kr\/\">DGK<\/a>); Secretary General: <b>Horacio Maldonado<\/b> (<a href=\"https:\/\/dac.org.ar\/\">DAC<\/a>); Executive Council Members: <b>Danilo Serbedzija<\/b> (<a href=\"https:\/\/dhfr.hr\/\">DHFR<\/a>); <b>Laza Razanajatovo<\/b> (<a href=\"https:\/\/apaser.africa\/\">APASER<\/a>); <b>Anjum Rajabali<\/b> (SRAI); and <b>Malu de Martino<\/b> (<a href=\"https:\/\/diretoresbrasil.org\/\">DBCA<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2>AVACI: Proposals Amid Technological Advancements<\/h2>\n<p>Following the FESAAL Congress, AVACI\u2019s assembly took place on November 6 and 7, as the organization worked on statutes for its legal registration.<\/p>\n<p>The confederation\u2019s influence extends beyond Latin America. Recent years have seen legislative reforms in various countries and the promotion of management societies in emerging territories.<br \/>\nAs stated by <b>Marcelo Pi\u00f1eyro<\/b> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dac.org.ar\/\"><b>DAC<\/b><\/a>), director and Honorary President of <a href=\"https:\/\/audiovisualauthors.org\/\">AVACI<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;AVACI is working with other regional organizations and <a href=\"https:\/\/wipo.int\/\">WIPO<\/a> to recommend global laws ensuring remuneration for public screenings. These laws already exist in Italy, Poland, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, and Colombia.&#8221;<br \/>\nThe Congress also addressed issues such as streaming rights and artificial intelligence (AI). The President of Directors of Colombia (<a href=\"https:\/\/directorescolombia.com.co\/\">DASC<\/a>), <b>Teresa Saldarriaga<\/b>, stated during her presentation: \u201cOne of our concerns is the reduction in work. Technology, the way audiovisual content is consumed, and the world itself are changing at an incredible pace, and we rely on that for our livelihood. As a collective management society, as <a href=\"https:\/\/fesaal.org\/\">FESAAL<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/audiovisualauthors.org\/\">AVACI<\/a>, we should establish an analysis department to determine where this is heading. If production stops, how will creators make a living? Colombia has 12 laws on AI, but none addressing how to regulate it. AI will always copy us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The second day of the <a href=\"https:\/\/audiovisualauthors.org\/\">AVACI<\/a> Congress featured a presentation by filmmaker and developer <b>Christoph Bell<\/b>, who has successfully intertwined traditional cinematic storytelling with the potential of AI-based tools. His work has sparked a fascinating debate on authorship, rights, and the future of cinema.
